About Coen Pontoh, as quoted from Paras Indonesia

Coen Husain Pontoh comes from a simple farming family in the village of Boroko in North Sulawesi. He started off being involved in the Muslim Students Association (HMI) but it was the Manado chapter of the Indonesian Students Solidarity for Democracy (SMID) which actually taught him about organizational and democratic principles. During the Soeharto era, Coen was heavily involved in the labor movement and was jailed for his activity along with another labor leader Dita Indah Sari. He has written the books Akhir Globalisasi Dari Perdebatan Teori Menuju Gerakan Massa (2003) and Utang Yang Memiskinkan (2002).
